Say “disinformation governance” is about unconstitutionally “policing speech.”
Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas announced during a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on Wednesday that his agency has established a Disinformation Governance Board to combat misinformation ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
Senator Marco Rubio of Florida responded publicly, saying that the president has “created an official Soviet style censorship agency inside of DHS.“ He pointed out that the Homeland Security Department is not focusing on what the department was created to do, “stopping drugs from coming into America, or securing the border, stopping illegal immigration,“ but has shifted its focus to “police” speech.
Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri also responded in a letter to the DHS secretary, “I confess, I, at first thought this announcement was satire. Surely no American Administration would ever use the power of Government to sit in judgment on the First Amendment speech of its own citizens. Sadly I was mistaken.” Senator Hawley added, “Rather than protecting our border or the American homeland, you have chosen to make policing Americans’ speech your priority. This new board is almost certainly unconstitutional and should be dissolved immediately.”
In his testimony, Secretary Mayorkas said the goal was to bring DHS resources together to address the spread of disinformation in minority communities.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For Secretary Mayorkas as he considers the feedback of the senators.
- For members of Congress as they endeavor to protect the freedom of speech.
- For God’s mercy upon this nation and for those in positions of authority to seek Him.
